The Chinle Unified School District is located in the center of the Navajo Nation, sixty miles south of Utah and thirty miles west of New Mexico in Arizona’s Four Corners region. It is located in the high desert, at 5,500 feet elevation, on the floor of the one-hundred mile long Beautiful Valley that is parallelled by U.S. Highway 191. The mouth of Canyon De Chelly National Monument is but two miles distant. Ninety-five percent of the students are Navajo. The District serves over four-thousand five-hundred students at seven schools.
Like other schools on Federal Trust Lands, the District provides housing in the form of studio apartments to four-bedroom homes for it’s employees. Rates are nominal. Available housing is dependent upon vacancies at time of arrival. School housing compounds are located in Chinle, Many Farms and Tsaile’. Salary schedules are above average for the State. A local supermarket and shopping center provide groceries and esentials at competative prices. Cable television and local Internet access are available. Churches of major faiths are represented in the valley.
